At the opposite end of the scale from the F12berlinetta, we find the latest in plug-in hybrid technology from +Chevrolet, +Ford Motor Company and +Toyota USA.

+Motor Trend Magazine asks the question; which would take the Volt or the Fusion Energi? The Volt is the pioneering series hybrid/extended range EV while Fusion adopts the latest version of Ford's power-split parallel hybrid architecture. The EPA has rated the Volt at 94 MPGe (miles per gallon equivalent) in charge depleting mode (electric drive) while the Fusion which comes out later this year is projected to get over 100 MPGe.

Meanwhile Toyota is about to launch the plug-in version of the Prius with an EPA rating of 95 MPGe. The Prius offers an electric driving range of about 11 miles while the Volt can go about 35 miles without gas and the Fusion is expected to get about 20 miles per charge.

The Volt provides the utility of a hatchback although the large central battery means it is limited to just four seats. The Fusion gets a roomier back seat with space for five although cargo space is more limited by the trunk.

Neither of these cars is inexpensive although they are certainly a lot more affordable than the Ferrari. Which would you choose?

The Ferrari F12berlinetta! Smaller, lighter and more powerful than its predecessor, what more could you ask for.

With the launch of the F12berlinetta, Ferrari has completed the four year revamp of its entire lineup with the FF, 458 Italia and California that among other things has produced a 30% improvement in fuel efficiency. Now while Ferraris are still among the thirstiest vehicles on the road, the relatively few that are built every year (about 7,000 units) have a pretty minimal overall impact.

Sometimes you need to toss your most basic assumptions in order to solve a problem.

The heart is simply a pump that circulates blood through the body to deliver oxygen and remove carbon dioxide. But if you think about it, who says you need to deliver the blood in pulses rather than continuously. All previous attempts at an artificial heart tried to replicate the beating of a human/animal heart.

Doctors Bud Frazier and Billy Cohn realized that blood could be distributed more efficiently by a pair of turbines that would probably be more reliable over the long term. Sure, the recipient of a turbine heart has no pulse, but he is very much alive regardless.

Watching the new Top Gear right now and the boys have come up with another brilliant comparison test. They tested a trio of track day cars, the Caterham Seven R500, the KTM X-Bow and the Hamster brought a Morgan trike. They started off with a 0-100-0 mph test which Hammond insisted should begin with a tradition Le Mans start. I won't spoil the winner for you, but let's just say that the Morgan powered by an air-cooled V-twin never made it to 100 mph on the road course the boys were testing on.

"there's no place for the state in the bedrooms of the nation."

From a 1967 interview the late Pierre Elliot Trudeau gave to the Canadian Broadcasting Company in 1967 after introducing an omnibus bill in the Canadian parliament that among other things decriminilized homosexual acts between consenting adults.

Despite the passing of more than 45 years there are still those in the United States that proclaim the need to shrink government almost everywhere, except it seems the bedroom.

It's long past time for the American police state that has accelerated in the wake of 9/11 to be disbanded. You cannot protect freedom by burying it beneath the boot heels of the state.

Meanwhile, in Syria…

Errr, Egypt…

I mean, Libya – no wait, Iraq…

This is our America: a police state, where civil protest is treason, to be put down with brutality and superior firepower.

Wake up and smell the anger, Sweet Land of Liberty. And hurry.
