Anyone who knows anything about adrenal fatigue would just LTAO when reading this article. Probably 80% of the waking world is maxing their adrenal glands out even without coffee in their lives (stresses of work, extended periods of wakefulness due to invention of artificial light, electronics, etc., etc.). Many if not most are on the brink of some kind of adrenal exhaustion event and just don't see it coming because the medical estab only gets covered by insurance when adrenals have completely failed and become something like Addison's Disease.

A friend of mine just happened to release a short article which kind of gives the cold air off the iceberg on this.

    http://www.shelleyjaffe.com/2012/06/14/ill-have-an-adrenal-exhaustion-latte-with-an-extra-shot-of-erectile-dysfunction/

To say people can "drink as much coffee as they like" just because there is some aspect of it that appears to offer a health benefit or two omits a lot of other processes that are affected by stimulants such as coffee.

The truth is, the adrenals are in many ways one of the key orchestra leaders of the 10s of thousands of endocrine and enyzmatic processes in the human body. Every time you pound as many cups of coffee (or some other stimulant) thinking you're giving yourself a "energy", you're also bypassing the normal function of the adrenals. Their job is to help you avoid an attack by giving you the energy you need to get out of dodge fast. But then they are supposed to come to rest afterwards. Coffee doesn't allow for this. So the adrenals get over stimulated.

Adrenals also produce the cortisol you need to fight system inflammation in the body. Cortisol also helps regulate blood sugar.

Over-caffeinated people tend to have stressed/exhausted/failing adrenals, which makes for less cortisol which increases inflammation and makes for peaks and valleys in blood sugar. This can open the door for disease, headaches and a host of other things which people complain about on a daily basis (weight gain for example).

So I'd watch out for these articles which seem to justify the use of artificial stimulants. Do a little more research. Maybe while you're ordering up that next triple latte, consider picking up a book on the subject like Adrenal Fatigue: The 21st Century Stress Syndrome by James Wilson.

And maybe make it a half-caff…
