The world of George RR Martin's Song of Ice and Fire (aka +Game of Thrones) is at roughly the middle ages from a technological standpoint so there are no self-propelled vehicles anywhere in sight.

+Jalopnik takes a look at what the various houses that comprise the Westeros aristocracy would drive if they did drive and does a pretty good job of pick appropriate mounts.

When OS/2 V3 aka Warp landed in the early 90s I actually bought a copy and used it as my daily driver on my work laptop for a couple of years. It was so far ahead of Windows 3.1 in terms of multi-tasking support and stability that it was a pleasure to use. Best of all with its virtualization capabilities and Win3.1 built in, it could actually run any Windows apps I needed in a better protected mode than stock windows.

Unfortunately when Windows 95 arrived with Win32 APIs, IBM' relationship with Microsoft had deteriorated to the point that they were no longer really supporting the new APIs very well and I couldn't use many of the apps I needed. Thus I had to revert back to using raw Windows for more than a decade. I dabbled with various Linux distros but since I needed to actually do stuff rather than being a developer, it just didn't work for me.

Only after Mac OS X arrived and I moved into writing and content creation did I finally transition off Windows for the most part although my recent forays back into the corporate world have forced me to use Win7 at least part of the time.

OS/2 did serve as a great transition from the DOS world (with some Win3 experimentation) to a full time multi-tasking GUI world.

OS/2 turns 25 today. It's legendary for having failed, but it's never really gone away. Here's my tribute.

I'm not sure how it is that these leaks always seem to surface through one of the numerous obscure eastern European sites, but here is the Fisker Atlantic (formerly known as Project Nina). Assuming that +Fisker Automotive manages to survive it's current monetary squeeze (something that is far from guaranteed) the Atlantic is intended to come in at about half the price or less of the $100K+ Karma.

It retains the same basic front engine/rear motor extended range EV layout of the Karma but with a BMW four cylinder sitting under the hood and presumably a lower motor output.

While the Karma has dubious build quality and reliability so far, it's hard to argue with Henrik Fisker's sense of style and that carries over to this new model. It retains many of the cues of its big brother but on a more reasonable scale and hopefully it tips the scales a bit lower than the Karma's 5,300 lbs as well.

The full story on the Atlantic should be revealed on Tuesday.

When Audi contests the 24 Hours of Le Mans this year with a pair of R18 e-tron quattro… 1

When Audi contests the 24 Hours of Le Mans this year with a pair of R18 e-tron quattro hybrids with electro-mechanical flywheels, they will be the first to use that configuration in the classic endurance race.

While Audi will be the first to actually race at Le Mans, they aren't the first to try. Sixteen years before Williams first ran this system in its 2009 F1 car, +Chrysler Group LLC showed off a race car concept based around a flywheel powered hybrid.

The Patriot was shown as a concept in 1993 and it was hoped to run it at Le Mans in 1995. The chassis was designed by Reynard to the then-current World Sports Car rules but the powertrain was completely unique. Primary power came from a two-stage turbine driving a pair of alternators. The turbine was fueled by liquified natural gas. The electricity from the alternators was to feed a 500 hp AC induction traction motor.

Turbines have several advantages including being able to run on almost anything that will burn and producing a lot of power from a very small package. Unfortunately they aren't very good at transient response; that is handling sudden changes in output which is important on a race track where you spend a lot of time braking and accelerating.

That's where the flywheel comes in. Under braking, the motor would spin up the flywheel and then during acceleration the flywheel drive the alternators to generate a burst of electricity for accelerating.

While Williams and Porsche and have demonstrated the viability of using a flywheel hybrid in racing over the last 3 years, Chrysler was ahead of its time. During testing at Chrysler's tech center, flywheel failures destroyed several test cells and there were numerous other problems. By 1994, the project had been cancelled without ever running the completed powertrain in the Reynard chassis. The original concept now sits in the Walter P Chrysler museum in Auburn Hills MI.

As they say, timing is everything.
