+Fisker Automotive just finished up their reveal of the Atlantic, the second model line they plan to produce. The design is clearly an evolution of the Karma design language, although smaller and potentially a bit roomier.

Aside from the fact that they will use a BMW four cylinder engine as the range extender (something that was announced two years ago), Henrik Fisker and CEO Tom LaSorda didn't announce any other hardware details. Following last week's recall on defective batteries I'll be curious to see if they continue with A123 or switch to a different supplier.

Of course all that may be moot if the company can't generate enough cash to fund development of the Atlantic tool up the Wilmington Delaware plant where it is supposed to be built.

I'm not sure how it is that these leaks always seem to surface through one of the numerous obscure eastern European sites, but here is the Fisker Atlantic (formerly known as Project Nina). Assuming that +Fisker Automotive manages to survive it's current monetary squeeze (something that is far from guaranteed) the Atlantic is intended to come in at about half the price or less of the $100K+ Karma.

It retains the same basic front engine/rear motor extended range EV layout of the Karma but with a BMW four cylinder sitting under the hood and presumably a lower motor output.

While the Karma has dubious build quality and reliability so far, it's hard to argue with Henrik Fisker's sense of style and that carries over to this new model. It retains many of the cues of its big brother but on a more reasonable scale and hopefully it tips the scales a bit lower than the Karma's 5,300 lbs as well.

The full story on the Atlantic should be revealed on Tuesday.

Consumer Reports early impressions of the +Fisker Automotive Karma are up and it doesn't seem to live up to its $100,000+ price tag.

In large part, the Karma comes across as more of an under-engineered design concept than a viable mass production machine. Not an auspicious start.

When an app crashes on your phone, it's not the end of the world

But software bugs in a car can range from simply annoying to downright dangerous.

I worked with automotive embedded software systems as an engineer for 17 years and making sure the software is robust and reliable is one of the toughest parts of developing modern cars. In fact, it's one of the main reasons it still takes so long to bring a new car to market.

Being an early adopter in consumer electronics is a lot easier than in the car business. Hopefully, Fisker owners will be patient and the engineers will address these problems quickly before it does irreparable damage to the brand reputation.

There's going to be a major executive announcement coming from +Fisker Automotive at 9:55am PST today. Considering the problems the company has had recently this could be huge (or it could be much ado about nothing). Is it possible that the venture capital investors have run out of patience with founder and CEO Henrik Fisker? We'll be watching.

Venture capital investing is never for the faint of heart, it's often really… 6

Venture capital investing is never for the faint of heart, it's often really more about gambling than actual investing, especially for early rounds.

The risks inherent in this sort of investing in the technology field are multiplied by several orders of magnitude when you are getting mixed up with a startup in the auto industry.

Building cars in any significant volume is one of most capital intensive business in the world. And that's after you've spent hundreds of millions of dollars just to develop a product.

One of the standard bits of boiler plate in any investment prospective is something to the effect that "past performance is no guarantee of future success."

In the car business it should probably be something along the lines of "past performance of other automakers means that this venture will more than likely fail." Thousands of auto brands have come and gone over the last 125 years, and anyone putting money into a startup with big performance promises based on amazing new technology should probably be prepared up front to say goodbye to their cash.

I honestly wish I could say that this was a surprise, but frankly I'm surprised that Fisker actually got as far as it did. The 125+ years of the auto industry is riddled with far more failed brands than successful ones and jumping in at the technological bleeding edge is a great way to be among the latter group.
