UPS has been deploying alternative powerplant delivery vehicles for years 2

It's now adding more hydraulic hybrids to its fleet. I first wrote about these back in 2007 http://green.autoblog.com/2007/04/20/sae-world-congress-ups-delivery-truck-with-fev-hydraulic-series/

I think delivery vehicles are a perfect application for hybrid drive trains: high mass coupled with stop and go makes for poor fuel economy.
The large size of the vehicles makes it easier to integrate a secondary energy storage device.
What I would really like to see is a plugin hybrid garbage truck. It is the perfect application: these trucks operate out of a central station where they can be recharged. They can use the diesel engine to cruise on main roads between the recycling center and a residential neighborhood. Once in the residential neighborhood, they can operate as EV with heavy regen to much quieter and efficient.
