I asked Lutz if he thought Ghosn was a madman or a genius based on these plans. To my surprise, he replied that he thought it was a bit of both. If EVs took off, everyone would consider him a genius for jumping in with both feet. On the other hand, you have to be a bit crazy to make such a multi-billion dollar bet on battery powered cars.
It's still way too early for a definitive judgement on electric vehicles, but I'm inclined to think that hybrids, plug-in hybrids and extended range EVs will be far more successful than pure BEVs.

I agree. Unless the pure EVs get substantially cheaper and can be used as a secondary car… But the price would need to be crazy low.

As gasoline and diesel combustion engines get more efficient, and mileage nearly doubles from the old 22-25 mpgs of a decade ago up to 40-45+mpgs, with 600-700 mile ranges (here's looking at you, Passat TDI) the attractiveness of electric cars will be even more diminished. Slow sales will mean no incentive to build infrastructure, which is needed to grow acceptance, and more sales, so the downward spiral will begin again.
