iPhone and iPad users that upgrade to iOS6 in the coming weeks may find that are sadly disappointed with what Apple has done to their mapping app. While the 3D building renderings of San Francisco are certainly visually cool, they really don't to much to enhance usability. Apple is now relying on Yelp listings for points of interest which are much more limited. Someday, Apple may improve the new maps app, and hopefully it will come quicker than upgrades to iTunes.
In the meantime, there's always Android

When I upgrade to 6, the first thing I'll do is download GoogleMaps. It ain't pretty, but that database is unbeatable.
Turn by turn / voice prompts are/ is overrated on phones to me. Being aware of your surroundings with the aid of a map is better.

Google Maps is the only thing that I really miss from my Android phone. While it is available on ios, it does not include the critical, turn-by-turn directions that I used all the time! My understanding is that the new map app for ios6 does not include turn-by-turn, so no big advance for me.
Actually, the new app will have turn by turn. And it's getting good reviews:
