Reshared post from +Dwight Silverman

Volkswagen, seeking greater work-life balance for SOME of its German employees, is turning off BlackBerry email to them when they're off-shift. Of course, this doesn't apply to senior management . . . who likely will have to deal with the issues raised after hours by their minions not getting email.

As much as I love Android, this sort of bullshit from manufacturers is just so aggravating.

If Touchwiz (or Sense or Blur) is so wonderful, don't bake it into the OS, build it as an app that can be installed just like other launchers such as Launcher Pro and ADW. If users actually like it, they can install and use it. This way, base OS can be upgraded almost as soon as Google posts it.

For Samsung to claim that the original Galaxy S can't have Android 4 because it doesn't have enough memory to support their proprietary Touchwiz interface is totally disingenuous.

My 16 year old son has a Samsung Fascinate (the Verizon branded version of the Galaxy S) and wanted Android 4. I did a bit of searching on the forums and found a fresh build of Ice Cream Sandwich that is pretty much fully functional and built from the open source code. I backed up the original firmware and flashed ICS and it works great. Battery life is better than before and the new ICS user interface runs smooth as silk.

Please Samsung, just offer a vanilla version of ICS for Fascinate owners as an option. Since this phone has already been superceded, it won't lose any sales and loyal customers will be rewarded. Those that prefer Touchwiz, don't have to upgrade or they can buy a Galaxy S2 when it gets an ICS build with touchwiz.

Samsung: no ICS upgrade for Galaxy S and Galaxy Tab because of TouchWiz
Samsung has just distributed the worst news of this Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade cycle: the popular Galaxy S smartphone that sold 10 million units last year and the 7-inch Galaxy Tab tablet won't be upgraded to Android 4.0. The company's argument is that they lack sufficient RAM and ROM to run the new OS alongside TouchWiz and other "experience-enhancing" software. This will come as a massive blow to the great many users of the Galaxy S, who would have rightly expected the 1GHz Hummingbird proc…

I totally agree with MG on this one, channels that are currently only available through cable need to break out and start offering their service a la carte via streaming. If just a handful of channels including HBO, Starz and BBC would disintermediate the cable companies, I would pay for them and cancel my comcast TV service.

After all, we watch most of what we want to see via on-demand or the DVR anyway, so we don't need broadcast.

More importantly, I don't want to subsidize the NFL, NBA or Major League baseball any more. The fees that the networks have to pay to carry big league sports reportedly account for as much as 20% of our cable TV bills. No one in my household watches football, basketball or baseball so why should we pay to support athletes getting $5, 10, or 15 million a year?

I'm happy to pay for what we watch, but I only want to pay for what we ACTUALLY watch. Get with the program HBO and others!

In a first drive review of the new 2013 Chevy Malibu, this paragraph should never have been published:

Throw in a dash of underbody cladding and the 2013 Chevrolet Malibu Eco is good for a .30 coefficient of drag. For reference, the Chevrolet Corvette is only slightly slipperier at .29 – a figure the standard 2013 Malibu will reach in part thanks to its more aerodynamic wheel and tire package. GM tallied the pros and cons of greater fuel efficiency by decreased drag or decreased rolling resistance courtesy of the Goodyear Assurance rubber found on the Eco, and the 17-inch alloy wheels and low-rolling rubber won out against the slicker 18-inch option. GM says that the standard Malibu will feature a coefficient of drag that's within spitting distance of the .28 of the Chevrolet Volt – a figure that vehicle shares with the 2012 Toyota Camry.

It's very awkwardly worded and I'm not sure it's factually correct. It doesn't seem right that an 18-inch tire/wheel would have lower aerodynamic drag than a 17-inch. If the problem is the wheel design they should have used a different wheel for the Eco.

Since the Eco is supposed to be the most efficient version of the Malibu, and they make extra effort to lower drag with thermostatically controlled shutters behind the grille and underbody panels, using higher drag wheels makes no sense. Copy editing is important, and all too often neglected online.

But an editor on an automotive site (or any outlet for that matter) should have enough knowledge of the subject to ask whether some content is accurate. That's why the traditional buff books have technical editors like Frank Marcus, Dennis Simanaitis and Don Sherman. These guys know the ins and outs of how a vehicle works.

New GPS satellites can help facilitate autonomous vehicles like EN-V 10

When the General Motors EN-V concept vehicles were demonstrated at the 2011 Consumer Electronics Show http://bit.ly/u69R8R and http://bit.ly/tNtRpU, one of the most frequently asked questions by the media was "when will we see something like this hit the streets?"

Christopher Borroni-Bird, GM's director of advanced technology vehicle concepts explained that small autonomous vehicles like the EN-V were probably at least ten years out. One of the limiting factors is the accuracy of current GPS systems. Right now the satellite based location system is can pinpoint a location down to about 3 meters (all bets are off if you are in an urban canyon in a place like Manhattan or Chicago). Reliable autonomous operation will require sub 1-meter positioning so that vehicles can stay in their lanes and better performance in dense urban areas that these vehicles are best suited too.

Borroni-Bird mentioned a new generation of GPS satellites that would be put into orbit later this decade could resolve this problem. Lockheed Martin is about to take a big step in this direction as it starts testing the first of these new satellites in preparation for launch in 2014. http://bit.ly/sNAbBl

Bring on the new birds and the pod cars!
