Unfortunately +Bill Nye didn't come to fame until I was already an adult, but thankfully both of my kids grew up watching and learning from him. A world with more teachers like Bill Nye would be a much better place.

The only apps that Apple should ever be allowed to block are those that contain malware or don't function at all (crashing all the time). Beyond that they should either pass everything through or allow alternate app stores as Android does.

Christopher Boronni-Bird revealed today that he has left his position as director of advanced technology vehicle concepts at +General Motors where he led the development of the EN-V (electric networked vehicle) concepts among many other projects. Boronni-Bird is joining Qualcomm as a VP of Strategic Development.  Given Chris' history of working on urban mobility projects, I wouldn't be surprised if vehicle to vehicle and vehicle to infrastructure communications development is a major focus of his new role. 

In this video Chris describes the premise of the EN-V during a demonstration at the 2011 Consumer Electronics Show. Best of luck to Chris in his new role.

The future of the car is all about connections, within the cabin, between cars and to the surrounding infrastructure. As an aside, I just learned today that Chris Borroni-Bird has left +General Motors where he was director of advanced technology vehicle concepts to join +Qualcomm as VP of Strategic Development. 

At GM, Chris was the driving force behind the EN-V urban mobility concept vehicles. The N in EN-V stands for Networked, and V2V and V2I communications are a critical part of making the whole idea of autonomous vehicles work. Qualcomm is one of the world's leading producers chips for mobile communications devices. There could be some very interesting times ahead for Chris and Qualcomm.

If you haven't read Daemon and Freedom(TM) by Daniel Suarez, you really should. His novels are speculative fiction thrillers set in a time very close to our own filled with technology of the present and very near future. His story-telling is fantastic. This passage really sums up a lot of what is wrong with the world today.

"I started educating myself on why farming no longer made sense. We basically used oil and aquifer water to temporarily boost the carrying capacity of the land, all for economic growth demanded by Wall Street investors. It’s a crazy system that only makes sense when you foist all the costs onto taxpayers in the form of crop subsidies that benefit agribusiness, and defense spending to secure fossil fuels. We’re basically paying for corporations to seize control of the food supply and dictate to us the terms under which we live."
