If this article from the UK-based AutoExpress is to be believed, GM will opt for a smaller battery for the second generation Vauxhall/Opel Ampera and presumably the near identical +Chevrolet Volt. The story quotes Thomas Sedran, GM’s Vice President of Strategy and Operations as saying 18-30 miles of electric range is sufficient compared to the 25-50 miles the current model is capable of. 

Going with a 40% smaller battery would allow the engineers to drop about 150 pounds and probably several thousand dollars of cost.  Re-configuring the current T-shaped battery pack would also potentially allow the designers to add accommodations for a third passenger in the back seat addressing one of the biggest complaints against the Volt. 

The weight reduction and a new more efficient range extender engine would lead to improved fuel efficiency in charge sustaining mode. GM is also no doubt learning lessons from both current Volt customers and its competitors.  

The current electric range of approximately 40 miles was selected based on data that said 75% of drivers go less than that on a daily basis. The 30,000+ Volts and Amperas on the road already are feeding back a lot of usage data to the OnStar databases. GM has probably found that the shorter range would still meet the requirements of the way drivers are actually using these vehicles. 

More importantly the shorter range would still allow GM to complete the EPA driving cycles without running the engine, in the same way that Ford is able to do with the Fusion Energi and C-MAX Energi. The reduced weight would help the hybrid mode mileage allowing the new Volt to get much better label numbers than the current model.

Much like tech companies including Apple, Google and Facebook, Ford has launched a developer program for SYNC AppLink. Following a two year private beta with selected developers, the AppLink SDK is now available to anyone that wants to connect their apps to Ford and Lincoln vehicles.

Before Ford will let you distribute apps with the hooks to the car, they will have to check it out and approve to make sure it's appropriate for use while driving. So that means no Angry birds with your steering wheel controls. But we can look forward to plenty more media and location apps that can be controlled by voice.

This could be a very interesting device for some remote control of your car

Delphi has come up with a dongle that plugs into the OBD-II port of any car built since 1996 and incorporates a cellular radio. The OBD-II port is an industry standard diagnostics port that can be used for reading out trouble codes, re-flashing ECUs and other tasks. 

Until now only vehicles with embedded cellular radios like GM vehicles with OnStar or Ford's new plug-in vehicles could support this kind of capability. With a cellular device, you can use a smartphone to lock/unlock your vehicle, start it up, locate with GPS and more. This dongle would add that capability to tens of millions of existing vehicles. The big question is how much will the device and corresponding Verizon service cost and has Delphi done their homework on the security side. 

Security will be a big issue.  Until now the only real remote computer security problems with cars have been some demonstrations of cracking into the tire pressure monitoring system and some rare instances of grabbing wireless codes for keyless entry systems.  Anything else required actual physical access to the OBD-II connector. This device would provide that access remotely. I'll sit back and wait to see what security experts think of this after they pound on it for a while.
