+Ford Motor Company has launched the first open developer program for an automaker

Much like tech companies including Apple, Google and Facebook, Ford has launched a developer program for SYNC AppLink. Following a two year private beta with selected developers, the AppLink SDK is now available to anyone that wants to connect their apps to Ford and Lincoln vehicles.

Before Ford will let you distribute apps with the hooks to the car, they will have to check it out and approve to make sure it's appropriate for use while driving. So that means no Angry birds with your steering wheel controls. But we can look forward to plenty more media and location apps that can be controlled by voice.
