Yesterday was the 50th anniversary of the first commercial trips by the Shinkansen in Japan
High-speed trains like the Shinkansen, TGV and others are an amazing way to travel and in many cases far superior to flying. Last time I was in Japan in 2010, I took numerous bullet train trips and it was so much more comfortable and convenient than schlepping to an airport, dealing with security and all the other hassles of modern travel.?
The bullet train is a Japanese trademark. It is, in other words, a landmark in motion. Today, 50 years to the time it made a trip for the first time,
