+Swine Cog how does it not make sense?  It's basically just the equivalent of saying we have less horses and buggies on the road, if he were talking about the automotive industry instead of the navy.  Makes perfect sense to me that as times change certain technologies go by the wayside.

+Melina M No it's not. Using your "new technology" argument:

    Horses and Buggies = Cars.

We actually have more cars, than we had Horses and Buggies.

The Navy wants/needs more ships. Obama/Biden don't think so. The bayonet/horses argument is dumb because the military a) still uses bayonets and b) has used horses in afghanistan.

Even military tech it doesn't make sense; because they had the equipment they needed back then, and Romney wants to make sure they have the equipment they need now. He's not talking about "counting ships" to count ships. He's counting ships in terms of what THE NAVY has asked for.

Talk about grasping at straws. The line was obvious to all but people who dont want to accept it was a killer line. So just in case you dont get it

The number of ships is not as relevent as the capability of the fleet.
Just as the number of bayonettes and horses does not dictate the capability of the infantry.

I sort of thought the follow up comment about having more nuclear submarines was relevant. I'm fine with reducing the number of ships and increasing the number of subs and ending up with a net gain in naval power.
