That is quite the story. The first thing that came to mind was "was this guy ever through a metal detector at an airport."
But I would say his attitude was one of those from that great generation.

Good lord, that's insane! I'm a little surprised he survived the initial blast(s?), considering how easy it would have been to get an infection. Incredible.
