I don't get it.
I keep hearing about this on NPR, but I don't yet understand what the fuss is about. Does it have something to do with illegal immigrants or something?
The claim that it disenfranchised minorities is not supported by the facts. Georgia has had more African Americans vote in 2008 and 2010 than they did in 2006. Many of these laws provide assistance for those that don't have ID's.
You know you really can't do anything without a photo id. You can't cash a check have a job, or received any kind of government assistance whatsoever from welfare to attending a University. But we never say well preventing poor people from attending college because they don't have an ID. If you don't have a job in school or receiving government assistance then voting should be the last thing that you should worry about.
It is perhaps ironic that one must have and use an account with Facebook, Yahoo, AOL, or Hotmail to comment on this Talking Points Memo post about voting restrictions.
Black voter turnout increased in Georgia and Indiana after voter ID laws passed. Georgia began implementing its law requiring one of six forms of voter ID in 2007. According to data from Georgia Secretary of State Brian Kemp, the black vote increased by 42%, or 366,000 votes, in 2008 over 2004. We must employ SOME method to ensure that only those eligible to vote, actually do so. If state-issued IDs aren't it, then what is it? It seems to be the okay method for everything else in life.
The hilarious part is that most areas of the US can't keep you from having two voters registrations (or more) at multiple addresses. I knew of a kid from Wisconsin who voted three times in the most recent recall. UW kids are trash, btw
