In early 1961 a group of designers, engineers, planners and marketers gathered to formulate a response to the changing demographics of the auto market as baby boomers were hitting driving age. With a business case in hand for a compact, affordable and stylish sporty car, they set to work creating a new car. Dozens of proposals were tried and discarded before Gale Halderman finally came up with the look that would hit the streets on April 17, 1964.

One of the most iconic race Mustangs of the last 49 years is the school-bus yellow Boss 302, that Parnelli Jones used to capture the 1970 TransAm championship.

This late prototype was equipped with a one-off interior upholstered in Lincoln leather and one of the first K-code HiPo 289 cubic inch V8s especially for Henry Ford II. He drove it as his personal car for the next year. A decade later Art Cairo lucked out and purchased it through a classified ad and has owned it for the past 39 years.
