Long-time readers of Road&Track will be happy to know that Dennis Simanaitis is still writing and publishing on his own site.  He has a good post that gives a brief overview of the difference between different types of plug-in hybrids, most comparing the +TOYOTA Prius PHV and the +Chevrolet Volt.

Along the same continuum lie other vehicles like the Fisker Karma and the +Ford Motor Company C-Max Energi. The C-Max offers more electrical power and battery capacity that let it drive electrically for up to about 20 miles and at speeds of up to 85 mph (compared to 62 mph for the Prius and 100 mph in Volt).

To learn more about how these vehicles work check out my e-book on the Volt called "Recharging the Car"  that also contains lots of information about other vehicles and powertrain architectures. http://amzn.to/NcHNwc

PLUG-IN HYBRIDS ARE NEAT, BUT NOT CREATED EQUAL
PLUG-IN hybrids, PHEVs, for short, have found more than 13,000 new homes in the U.S. during first six months of 2012; this, according to Edmonds.com. Most of these sales, of … Continue readi…

There's no arguing the fact that the latest Macbook Pro and Macbook Air is stunningly designed machines that work really well. However, neither one is upgradeable and even a battery swap is a major hassle.

We've owned a number of Macs (not to mention Windows machines that I've often built myself from parts) over the years including 3 macbook pros of various vintages that are still used daily in my home. Every one of those machines has received upgades, mostly more ram and bigger drives in order to keep up with the latest needs that have helped extend their useful life.

Frankly the difference in size between my late-09 unibody 15 inch MBP and the new one is not enough in my eyes to justify the sacrifice in upgradeability. I vote that this is planned obsolescence.

The ‘sealed-box’ Mac: Cutting-edge design or planned obsolescence?
Apple’s new top-of-the-line 15-in. MacBook Pro, with its ground-breaking Retina display, is drool-worthy, says columnist Richard Hoffman. But it comes with a cost: There are no user-replaceable parts …

Back in 2002 Paul Ryan made a very strong case for a federal stimulus to help the economy recover from the effects of the 9/11 attacks. He makes all of arguments and even praises senate Democrats for coming together help the country for the greater good rather than just trying to undermine the agenda of a president from the other side of the aisle the way Republicans have done for the past 4 years.

Friends of Carroll Pay Tribute to the Late Mr Shelby With One-Off GT500 Cobra

Out in Monterrey, California today, Ford board member Edsel Ford II, marketing chief Jim Farley and Shelby American president John Luft took the wraps off a one-off 2013 Shelby GT500 built as a tribute to the late Carroll Shelby. The car, built by “Friends of Carroll” has been dubbed the Shelby GT500 Cobra and is painted in the traditional Guardsman Blue with Wimbledon White stripes that graced many of the original Cobras of the 1960s.

It’s not the just the paint that sets this particular car apart from run-of-the-mill GT500s, that is if you can call a 662 hp Mustang run-of-the-mill! This car’s rear haunches are several inches wider than any standard Mustang that rolls out of the Flat Rock Assembly Plant.

Within those swollen wheel arches are 20-inch wheels that measure 10-inches wide in front and 13-inches wide at the back. Those back wheels are wrapped in 345-section rubber to help put the output of the engine to the road.

Speaking of the engine, the GT500’s already stout 5.8-liter V8 has had it’s normal 2.3-liter Eaton supercharger replaced with a 4.0-liter Whipple blower from the Ford Racing catalog.

The GT500 Cobra will be on display at the Ford pavilion at the Rolex Historics this weekend where the original Cobra is the featured marque this year. It will then go on tour throughout the fall before it gets put to an as yet undisclosed special purpose according to Jim Farley.
