Very cool idea for repurposing a bit of archaic hardware.

An architect in New York city is repuporsing phone booths into mini-libraries/book-drop-offs.

Makes perfect sense.

Repurposing antiquated equipment by letting it house other soon to be antiquated equipment. In 6 months, I imagine they'll put CD players in there too.

According to Rick Santorum, the only reason to require insurance companies to provide pregnant women with free prenatal care is too encourage more abortions.

"One of the things that you don't know about ObamaCare in one of the mandates is they require free prenatal testing," Santorum began telling about 400 people here. "Why? Because free prenatal testing ends up in more abortions and, therefore, less care that has to be done, because we cull the ranks of the disabled in our society. That too is part of ObamaCare — another hidden message as to what president Obama thinks of those who are less able than the elites who want to govern our country."

The more words we hear from Mr Santorum, the scarier he gets, especially for women.

A year ago this week, the third to last Space Shuttle mission, STS-133 finally launched from Kennedy Space Center in Florida after a delay of almost 4 months to address technical issues.

On board the shuttle was a crate containing a Robonaut 2, a humanoid robot co-developed by +NASA and engineers from +General Motors. What makes R2 different from other robots like Honda's Asimo is that it was designed to do actual work alongside humans both on the International Space Station and eventually in factories here on earth.

That means it is a lot stronger than Asimo which can do some fancy dance moves, but can't lift much weight.

In October 2010 when I was working on product and technology communications for GM, I went down to Florida to support some media events in conjunction with the original planned launch date. The second R2 prototype was being used to demonstrate the robot's capabilities. You can see most of the demo in this video with NASA engineer Nicholas Radford.

A few days ago, the crew on board the ISS finally powered up R2 and began the testing of its control systems in micro-gravity. http://www.theverge.com/2012/2/16/2802290/nasa-robonaut-human-robot-handshake-iss

Guess who made this statement: 1

Dogmatic ideological parties tend to splinter the political and social fabric of a nation, lead to governmental crises and deadlocks and stymie the compromises so often necessary to preserve the freedom and achieve progress.

Remarkably it describes the position our politics are in today to a T, thanks in large part to the continuing shift to the right of the Republican party over the past two decades. The quote can be found in a new biography of Mitt Romney http://amzn.to/wWO1Ux but it wasn't uttered by the man currently running for the GOP nomination.

In fact, those are the words of his father George Romney when in 1964 as governor of Michigan, he declined to endorse or campaign for his party's nominee Barry Goldwater. George Romney clearly a man who would not find a place in the 2012 GOP.

We just watched this week's episode of +Portlandia and one of the sketches features Fred Armison's character riding on a three-wheeled Can-Am Spyder http://www.can-am.brp.com/ while his partner Carrie Brownstien is on a single-wheeled contraption.

I did a little searching around for motorized unicycles and discovered Ryno Motors. Like many of the people and places featured in the show, Ryno is based in Portland. The company is currently trying to line up a manufacturing partner to launch production of this self-balancing unicycle. Contrary to the sound-effects in the sketch, Ryno has actually developed its cycle as an electric vehicle with a top speed of about 25 mph and a 30 mile range.

Ryno is taking orders for a limited run of 50 pre-production units at $25,000 a pop which seems pretty steep for what this is. If the company can find a manufacturing partner the regular versions are expected to cost about $4,200 which while not cheap is a lot more realistic.
