Where U.S. Life Expectancy is Dropping 6

Where U.S. Life Expectancy is Dropping
Red shows life expectancy fell over the last twenty years for women

Think about this when both Democratic- and Republican-parties — including President Obama — embrace the idea of patching our Federal budget on the backs of seniors and the poor by raising the eligibility ages for both Medicare and Senior Security. For many Americans, life expectancy is declining, not increasing.

Here's another way to look at the data from the NYT's article I posted about earlier, showing that lower-income white women were seeing their life expectancies decline, geographically instead of demographically.

Belief in Bad Science, or Bad Politics?
Romney seeks endorsement from creator of "can't get pregnant" nonsense

Maureen Dowd repeats what I posted earlier about the sheer ignorance and perfidy of the Ryan-Aiken legitimate-rape crowd, but with more venom and eloquence.

Dowd: "Paul Ryan, who teamed up with Akin in the House to sponsor harsh anti-abortion bills, may look young and hip and new generation, with his iPod full of heavy metal jams and cute kids. But he’s just a fresh face on a Taliban creed — the evermore antediluvian, anti-women, anti-immigrant, anti-gay conservative core. Amiable in khakis and polo shirts, Ryan is the perfect modern leader to rally medieval Republicans who believe that Adam and Eve cavorted with dinosaurs."

… "Mitt, who was for abortion rights (except for Mormons he counseled) before he was against them, in his last presidential bid went after the endorsement of Dr. John Willke, a former president of the National Right to Life Committee and father of the inanity about rape victims being able to turn back sperm if they put their mind and muscles to it.

"The nutty doctor hypothesized: “This is a traumatic thing. She’s, shall we say, she’s uptight.” Adding, “She is frightened, tight, and so on. And sperm, if deposited in her vagina, are less likely to be able to fertilize. The tubes are spastic.”
.

Just Think No
Why do Republicans have a gender gap when they ascribe superpowers to women, like the ability to block rape sperm with sheer willpower?

Apple products are absurdly difficult to work on now, but if this introduce this… 16

Apple products are absurdly difficult to work on now, but if this introduce this new screw, it should be all the reason people need not to buy another Apple product. Why does Apple feel the need to put stuff together with fasteners like this and the dumb penta-lobe screws they use now.  Given the way their devices are built it usually easy to determine if someone has messed with it and while something is covered by warranty, people will just bring it in for repair/replacement. Once it's out of warranty it shouldn't matter.

We need a right-to-repair for Apple products!

Apple could screw over iPhone repair shops with crazy new screw design
People who think Apple (AAPL) products are difficult to repair now haven’t seen anything yet. A Reddit user named “thrownawayyesok” has posted a pictur

The concept of a "right to be forgotten" is one of the most dangerous threats… 9

The concept of a "right to be forgotten" is one of the most dangerous threats to freedom in a long time and needs to be stopped now.

Throughout history as the world has changed, humans have had to adapt their behavior to fit new paradigms (Much as I hate to use that word I think it actually fits here) and this is one of those inflection points. With the right to be forgotten, we would implement one of the worst things that George Orwell described in 1984, the modification of history.

It's easy enough to change history on the net now, but at least caches and archives let us look back at what came before. Trying to eliminate that (regardless of the technical impracticality) is a bad move.

People need to be made aware that in this era of pervasive recording and communications, our actions have consequences both now and in the future. If you are afraid that nude photos could harm your future career path, don't take off your clothes. Don't have those last five drinks. Be aware and don't do stupid things that will embarrass you tomorrow or next year.

With CBS boss Les Moonves indicating that his network is planning to demand $4 million for a 30 second Super Bowl ad slot (up from $3.5 million this year) it's no wonder that +General Motors has opted to say "thanks but no thanks."

I'm guessing that GM will actually make a series of Super Bowl style ads just as they did this year and in years past. The only difference is that they won't actually run during the broadcast of the game.

If you think back to the week leading up to the game this year and the last several years, most of the big ads had already been posted on Youtube and most people had seen them long before kickoff. There were almost no surprises during the game. GM's Super Bowl ads will get just as much attention during the pre-game period and without costing them a penny.

A few days ago I posted about Pratt&Whitney's newest flying testbed, a modified Boeing 747SP used for testing new aircraft engines. https://plus.google.com/114133424228405038490/posts/iGWatNAKwcU

As some commenters mentioned, this plane was by no means the first of its type. At about the same time that Pratt was initiating its new testbed, it retired an old one. The plane being put out to pasture is actually the last remaining flying Boeing 720 in the world. The 720 was a shorter version of the ground-breaking 707 and now they are all gone.

Unfortunately, American politicians have no need for facts when it comes to legislating especially on so-call "law and order" issues like drugs.

We just watched this week's episode of +Portlandia and one of the sketches features Fred Armison's character riding on a three-wheeled Can-Am Spyder http://www.can-am.brp.com/ while his partner Carrie Brownstien is on a single-wheeled contraption.

I did a little searching around for motorized unicycles and discovered Ryno Motors. Like many of the people and places featured in the show, Ryno is based in Portland. The company is currently trying to line up a manufacturing partner to launch production of this self-balancing unicycle. Contrary to the sound-effects in the sketch, Ryno has actually developed its cycle as an electric vehicle with a top speed of about 25 mph and a 30 mile range.

Ryno is taking orders for a limited run of 50 pre-production units at $25,000 a pop which seems pretty steep for what this is. If the company can find a manufacturing partner the regular versions are expected to cost about $4,200 which while not cheap is a lot more realistic.
