Once upon a time, the region surrounding the Mediterranean was a haven for tolerance, respect and advancement. Empires inevitably whither and rot and all that was good before gets turned upside down. 

In a post imperialist world, America needs to learn the lessons that are so visible today in the Middle East. Nationalism, xenophobia and cronyism of the sort we increasingly see today in the corporatocracy that is American government lead to oppression, extremism and eventually violence. 

Heed the lessons of history or be doomed to repeat them. ?
