Random thoughts from a random mind
I didn't know you had chickens. Do they only eat feed during the snow months? Do they go out on the snow anyway?
They eat a lot less feed in warm months, but they still eat some. They'll go out in the snow if it's not too cold (down to about 20F) but it's been so cold the past couple of months that they rarely came out of the coop.
My parents have 9 (one got fatally injured by a hawk) and they got 10 pullets recently and are going to keep 6 out of them for their clutch.
