In album Bob Lutz at NAIAS 2014

As the press days of the North American International Auto Show wound down this afternoon, I encountered Bob Lutz twice in the span of an hour

Even at 80, Lutz remains remarkably active, being an advisor, board member and investor in numerous companies. Two of the companies that Lutz is involved with are VL Automotive and VIA Motors.

These two companies are like opposite sides of the same coin. VIA developed an extended range electric powertrain for trucks and has begun doing conversions of General Motors fullsize pickups and vans to make them into plug-in hybrids.

VL Automotive on the other hand is ramping up to take Fisker Karmas and rip out the extended range electric drive system (almost identical to what's going into the VIA trucks) and replacing it with a Corvette ZR1 powertrain.

Lutz and his partner Gilbert Villareal hope to start doing new-build VL Destinos from Karma chassis by the second half of the year pending a resolution of the Fisker restructuring. In the meantime they already have a bunch of orders for conversions of existing cars at $100,000 a pop will start doing those soon. ?
