Last night I let the dog out before going to bed and instead of just doing her business and coming back in, she made a beeline for the trees where she got sprayed directly in the face by a waiting skunk.
She returned to the deck foaming at the mouth and shaking her head trying unsuccessfully to eliminate the spray. Needless to say, I spent the next half hour sponging Rosie down with a mix of water, baking soda and peroxide while it continued to rain and mosquitoes attacked.
Hopefully Rosie has learned her lesson, but I will only be taking her out on the leash after dark from now on.

The skunk wasn't 'waiting,' for your pooch, it was their on business of its own. Your dog like saw (or more likely, smelled) the skunk and went to investigate. The skunk then likely stamped the ground and displayed a warning before spraying. Wary woodland animals know this is skunkspeak for "back off, or I'll let you have it!." But your dog didn't know this, and likely stuck a friendly nose forward. You know the rest.
That said, hopefully your dog is okay and will be smelling like a hound soon.
Yeah, c'mon, Sam. Skunks are cute. Without them, there'd be no Pepe LePew, my personal favorite of the Looney Tunes ouvre.
My wife's favorite, too. Pepe: "We play the game of love, no?" Who could resist a line like that?
