I'm guessing the major reason for this engine's existence is the Chinese tax break for engines 1.5L and lower.. otherwise why not just tweak the 1.6 for better efficiency since it's such a new powerplant
The ax breaks are certainly one reason for the 1.5 but the engine also incorporates a number of features from the 1.0-liter 3-cylinder ecoboost that improve packaging and efficiency while reducing weight. No doubt these features like the liquid cooled integrated exhaust manifolds and air-to-liquid intercooler will be incorporated into the larger engines eventually, but right now, Ford is also capacity constrained on the 1.6. They need more of these engines to meet demand on Escape and for the upcoming Transit Connect.
