It's a shame that Mazda never built this replacement for the RX-7, one of my favorite sports cars of all time
I've always been a fan of the Wankel rotary engine and it would have been great to get a proper update of the RX-7. While the RX-8 was a fine machine in many respects, I'd love to get a Miata with a 13B in it.
Here's my 2009 review of the RX-8 R3 edition http://www.autoblog.com/2008/10/08/in-the-autoblog-garage-2009-mazda-rx-8-r3-return-of-the-humme/

The Easter Drive (http://goo.gl/1u5mP) ended in a BBQ at Hoebeke (http://rxgarage.nl/) and in the shop they were working on a Mx-5 with a 13B transplant.
I do get that it's a convertible, but why all the hassle if you have the Rx-7 which is already perfectly setup.
Damn I had one of those as a 17-year-old bumming round the Gold Coast. I loved it!
Nice review. Makes me want to buy a used one. Seriously. I do miss my RX7. It had amazing road handling. And I used to do a lot of wilderness canoeing, and seeing the canoe on top of the RX7 was a thing of beauty. I tried the Miata but I am 6-2 and seat does not go any lower so I had to scrunch down to see the road. Have you found anything that is almost as good as the Rx7?
+Wouter Flikweert I think it's less of a rotary thing and more of a "let's see what else we can cram under the hood of a Miata." Some people would cram a turbojet into that engine bay, if you gave them the chance.
(Come to think of it, if you gave me a helo turbine, I might be tempted to do that.)
+Edward Longshanks the one thing I might be interested in is a Targa Rx-7.
Because T-top is the best top.
