One quarter of all the shoppers that built a 2013 Ford Fusion using the early configurator survey site opted for the Driver Assist Package. It will be interesting to see what actual take rate is for advanced driver assist systems when the #2013FordFusion  goes on sale in the next few months.

Driver assist technologies like collision alerts, and lane keeping systems are becoming increasingly common in vehicles like the #2013FordFusion  http://fordfusionstory.com/latest/index.php/2012/05/10/test-swf/

So far though these systems are relying on the sensors built into the vehicle to determine what to do which means they can respond to outside influences that they can "see." To really get the most out of these systems, it would help if they were more aware of what is happening beyond the "line-of-sight."

That's were V2X or vehicle to vehicle and vehicle to infrastructure communications come into play.  When a vehicle can get signals about is happening several cars down the road, it can alert the driver and respond even sooner potentially avoiding accidents and reducing the backups that are so irritating. Reducing random backups can improve traffic flow and reduce fuel consumption.

Ford to begin testing driver-assistance technologies in Germany
Ford Motor Co. today begins testing an array of car-to-car and car-to-infrastructure communications in Germany, including an obstacle warning system and a traffic sign assistance technology.

This shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone that has followed +Tesla Motors over the years. Tesla has a history of delivering cars to meet some arbitrary timeline regardless of whether they are actually ready just so they can get the headlines and they are by no means alone in doing this. Fisker has done the same with the Karma and many tech companies have used similar tactics.

Back in February 2008, Tesla delivered the first "production" Roadster to Elon Musk http://www.autoblog.com/2008/02/05/elon-musk-takes-delivery-of-first-production-tesla-roadster/

This particular car was more like a late beta version of the Roadster since it didn't incorporate many of the changes that would be included in cars 2-40 and then the V1.5 powertrain that would be added from car 41. Car #2 for co-founder Martin Eberhard wasn't delivered until late July and monthly deliveries remained in the low single digits until well into the fall of 2008.

Musk had previously committed to delivering the Model S in the first half of this year and he did that but it appears they are still working out the car and production process and likely will for many months to come.

The new 2013 SRT Vipers made their competition debut at Mid-Ohio yesterday and while they don't yet have the outright speed they need to run with the Corvettes, Ferraris, BMWs and Porsches, they did accomplish something the late Jaguar XK-Rs almost never did. They both finished, with the #91 car running 10th and the #93 in 12th. The team still has plenty of work to do, but finishing is always a good way to start. http://www.alms.com/results
