A big thumbs up to the voters of Maine, Maryland and Washington for pushing back against the bigots and fear mongers and realizing that same-sex couples are not a threat.

The best parts of the election results was the wide ranging repudiation of those super-wealthy that tried to use their financial resources to get the outcomes they wanted including Matty Maroun, Linda McMahon, Sheldon Adelson, the Koch brothers and the rest that managed to cloak their identities through the super-pac system.  We still need some serious reform of the finance system probably through a constitutional amendment but at least we all survived to fight another day.

Way back in 2009 when I spent a week with a European-spec +BMW 123d I praised the powertrain's performance and efficiency but lamented the fact that it wasn't available in the US market and more specifically in the 3 Series.

http://green.autoblog.com/2008/08/05/in-the-autobloggreen-garage-2008-bmw-123d-3-door-hatchback/

BMW's 1 Series is a great driving machine based on the the higher volume and much praised 3 series. Unfortunately despite the shorter wheelbase and significantly compromised interior packaging it was only about 100 pounds lighter than the 3.

I closed out my review then with the wish that BMW would offer it's marvelous turbodiesel four-cylinder in the US market 3 series wagon, combining the great dynamics of the 3 sedan with some reasonable utility and great fuel efficiency. It looks like that car will finally be arriving about a year from now.

Leaked: BMW diesels coming to the U.S. in 2013-2014
A leaked shot of an internal BMWNA Powerpoint presentation confirms a previous report we published in August: starting in 2013, a wide range of BMW diesels will make their way into the U.S. market.

If the cable companies really gave a damn, they would look at changing their business models and forcing the networks to unbundle all the channels we don't want to watch or pay for.  Stop forcing those of us with no interest in watching sports to subsidize Disney and ESPN and don't make us pay for stuff like the Golf channel. Let us create our own bundles for a reasonable price.

Cable TV executives are to establish a new research center in the heart of Silicon Valley to try to halt the emerging trend of “cord-cutting,” according to Reuters. CableLabs, a non-profit research……

For some people, an electric vehicle would make more sense in the wake of a natural disaster like Hurricane Sandy, but not for all.

The writer of this story highlights one driver of a BMW ActiveE that has stayed mobile, but only because his house is equipped with a natural gas-fueled emergency generator. For the vast majority of people that don't have a whole house generator handy, an EV would be no more useful than a car with an empty gas tank when the power is out. The same lack of electricity that prevents stations from pumping liquid fuel, would strand an EV.

Also while an EV could provide some emergency power for a few home appliances they wouldn't be able to do it for very long.

Assessing Sandy: Are Electric Cars A Better Bet In Emergencies?
For many of us, lines at gas stations and homes without power are no more than news, but millions on the U.S. East Coast are still coping with the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. Many areas are still wi…

Drivers in Quebec are required by law to mount up a set of winter tires during the snowy months and that's a good thing.

In the past when I had a V8 powered Mustang, I bought an extra set of wheels and mounted them with snow tires, and it made a huge difference in winter traction. In fact my high powered rear drive sports car did better on slippery surfaces than my wife's front wheel drive sedan with all-season tires.

Modern snow tires differ from all-season and summer tires in several important ways. They feature deeper tread grooves, and thousands of narrow grooves called sipes to help bite into snow and ice. Even the rubber itself is different with a formulation that helps it to stay pliable when the mercury dips.

Sacré Pneu! Quebec Mandates Winter Tires and the People Rejoice—or at Least Don’t Revolt
Drive down the streets of Montreal in the winter and you’ll notice a curious automotive fashion trend: Aftermarket wheels are everywhere, from high-end rims on Audis to rusted steelies on Saturns. It’…

This happens because we allow partisan politicians like Rick Scott and Jon Husted (and Ken Blackwell and Katherine Harris before them) to manage the voting process. This needs to be taken away from partisans.

How is this allowed to happen?

No One in America Should Have to Wait 7 Hours to Vote
What’s happening at polling stations in Ohio and Florida isn’t some fluke of nature or breakdown in equipment. It’s all part of a partisan design.
