Frankly there is absolutely no justification for elections to be controlled or run by private for-profit enterprises that have may potentially have a vested financial interest in the outcome. All voting mechanisms should be completely open-source whether they are hardware or software based with physical hard copies to verify every single vote that is cast. NO EXCEPTIONS!

I'm not opposed to paper and as I said even if you use a computer system, there should be a paper backup. The only real advantage of a computerized system is the speed of tabulation. Frankly I'd rather wait a few extra hours or a day to get accurate results rather than demand results in real time.

The UK delivers national election results in real time – faster than we get them from computerized systems – using only paper. They count the ballots as they come in, iirc.

Don't expect paper to be perfect either. Ballots could get "lost", and how do you track that without electronic logs?

You design good cross checks, such as having the ballots counted twice by separate people, plus spot checks by a third person. And what's easier to alter untraceable, paper logs or computer files?
