Attention Corvette fans 8

GM will be holding a press conference on Thursday morning at Road Atlanta (ahead of the Petit Le Mans this weekend) to make an announcement about the C7. No details available yet, but since it includes chief engineer Tadge Juechter, ALMS drivers Oliver Gavin and Tommy Milner and Corvette Racing Team Mgr Gary Pratt they will presumably at least confirm that a new C7R will be running in ALMS in 2013.

Do you have any thoughts whether it might be mid-engined this time, Sam?  I can't believe they would ever do that to the Corvette because it would be a completely different car, but the rumors just won't quit.

+Melina M I was about to write that it absolutely will not be be mid-engined, but that might not be entirely true.  While the engine will absolutely remain ahead of the cockpit, it could be shifted relative to the front axle and could be termed as a front-mid-engine layout.  We definitely won't see a rear mid corvette until at least the C8 and maybe not even then. Keep in mind that even Ferrari uses a front engine for its flagship F12

Okay, your thoughts are much like mine, then.  I'm working with the assumption that when people say "mid-engined" they're envisioning engine behind the cabin, not front-mid like the RX-8.

I personally don't think the Corvette ever will nor should be mid-engined.  It would probably be a phenomenal car, it just wouldn't be very… Corvettey.

A rear-mid-engine FieroVette might be seen as heresy. But it would completely reinvent the car in an era when horsepower is no longer hard to get. Handling would be insane. It'd be great on the track, though might get thrown into tougher classes.
