However, today my wife was so frustrated at browsing the through the hundreds of channels offered up by +Comcast yet finding nothing worthwhile to watch that she brought up the topic of cord cutting.
The reality is we only ever watch about 2 dozen of the hundreds of channels that Comcast insists on bundling. We never, ever watch any of the sports channels, or shopping channels, MTV channels, etc but of course we can't just pay for a bucket of channels and pick the ones we want.
I explained the downsides of cord cutting and what we'd likely miss out on along with the hoops we'd have to jump through for a while, but she's willing to give it a shot. I'll be putting together a plan and we will probably give Comcast the heave ho in the coming months.

Nice. I have been free of outdated broadcast commercial-laden TV for years and am happy with it, but I don't watch that much TV. I am currently considering a Roku 2 XS for Netflix, Amazon prime, and Hulu+, and keeping the HTPC with XBMC for local network files. Unfortunately at this time there is no single box that can do all of that without using a browser.

The cheapest way to go is an antenna for OTA channels. I built one for $5 from plans of the internet using coat-hangers and a 2×4 and have a dozen major networks for free. But then you still have to put up with commercials…..

+Chris Wall I cut the cord years ago as well. I use the Plex app on my Roku for streaming local files.

+James Talbot Thanks for the suggestion. It looks like the Plex Media Server has Ubuntu/Fedora/CentOS support. This looks like it could be a winner.
