    I notice they've banned scanners. Would that include Scanner Apps on your mobile phone? What about walkie talkies that look like cell phones? 

    There's no way they can know what various forms the banned items can take.

    That's just the cynical reality of modern major events. The whole "sponsor brand protection" thing where you can't wear Nike, Mercedes, Pepsi, etc. to the Olympic events is much worse IMO, but you're not allowed to upset the people paying for it.

    At the end of the day, they don't pick a country based on who is best-suited, but rather who will more easily bend to the demands of the organisers/sponsors. In the more malleable nation of South Africa, they actually made it a criminal offence to wear rival brands to a World Cup match. Actually changed the laws. That's how bad it can be…
