It's really tragic that religious groups in this country make it so politically suicidal for Americans to come forward and admit that they don't believe in a higher power. As a result we get almost every politician feeling like they have to pander to church-goers just so they don't get shouted down by the radicals on the right.

    That seems to be a trend in Australia too but probably to a lesser degree. It's interesting that we had a self declared Atheist Prime Minister who initially spoke about her traditional upbringing and how important churches were to the nation etc. It's like she felt she had to do some ass kissing to survive (or not look like an evil blood sucking devil or something)

    The Australian Christian Lobby is becoming more organised and more political and have become masters at exaggerating their importance in Australian politics. Some of our politicians are responding to it (and similar factors)
