I'm so glad that we gave up on the Newsroom after the second episode of season 1

I've never liked Aaron Sorkin's work and this show was a particularly egregious example. I'm not sorry to have missed this episode.?

Aaron Sorkin is still terrified of women on the internet
The HBO series The Newsroom began in 2012 as a story about one man’s mission to civilize — starting with the lowest-common-denominator churn of cable news. Like Mad Men, it is a workplace period…

The United States government committed human rights atrocities in the name of "protecting" the American people and accomplished nothing positive in the process

Torture is not and never has been an effective means of gathering intelligence. We need to permanently repudiate this behavior and punish those that authorized and committed these acts. If we do not prosecute the perpetrators it will surely happen again. ?

Interrogators waterboarded one detainee at least 183 times.

The 1.0-liter EcoBoost I-3 in the +Ford Motor Company Fiesta is an awesome engine. There's a lot to like about the rest of the car too but it's not the roomiest car in the segment. ?

Netflix has great original series that aren't getting the attention they should including Peaky Blinders

Netflix has great original series that aren't getting the attention they should including Peaky Blinders

I hadn't heard of Peaky Blinders until a week ago, but we've burned through two seasons in recent days. Everyone is talking about House of Cards and Orange is the New Black and this ranks as good as or better than those.

The story is kind of a mix of The Godfather and the Sopranos set in post-World War I Birmingham, England. The primary arc of the Shelby family's elicit business is set against a sub-plot of the troubles in Northern Ireland.

Cillian Murphy portrays protagonist Tommy Shelby, the decorated war hero that has come home to take control of the family business and attempt to take it legit (remind you of anyone?) while also going toe-to-toe with the loyalist Ulster police/military officer Chester Campbell. The despicable Campbell is brought to life by Sam Neill.

It's hard to cheer for a character whose business brings so much misery to so many lives, but as in all great storytelling, Murphy's Tommy Shelby is a complex character that has a tremendous storm boiling  just beneath the calm surface. Similarly as we learn more about Inspector Campbell, we learn why the Irish republicans have fought so hard for so long against those loyal to the British monarchy.

So far there have been two six episode seasons and they are well worth watching. ?
