The next phase in the life cycle of our yard has begun, now with caterpillars

The next phase in the life cycle of our yard has begun, now with caterpillars

Years ago when we first planted fennel and our kids were young, we began noticing eastern black swallowtail butterflies laying eggs. We collected some of the stems with eggs and put them in an aquarium and then continued feeding the caterpillars fresh fennel as they grew.

We haven't collected them in the last several years but +Julie Abuelsamid collected some yesterday and we currently have five caterpillars growing. In a few weeks we'll release the butterflies. ?

Back in 1964, lots of body styles were being considered for the then-new +Ford Motor Company  #Mustang  including a two-seater

A gentleman from Ohio saw this car at a 1964 traveling custom car show and following a strange sequence of events, ended up owning it four years later. ?

Back in the early 1960s, as Ford Motor Company product planners, designers and engineers were brainstorming ideas for a compact sporty car, there were numerous proposals for two-seaters. Most of those concepts never got any further than sketches, but at least one running prototype of a two-seat Mustang was built and survives today thanks to the devotion of Bill Snyder of Hudson, Ohio.

The steel blue cricket hunter is about 1 1/4 inches long but I can stand in the middle of a swarm of them and never get touched. If you're a cricket on the other hand, watch out!

These big #wasps  are avid pollinators for oregano and fennel among other plants and also go after other pest insects. ?

Peter Stevens is one of my favorite designers of recent decades

In addition to the revamped Lotus Esprit S4 and M100 Elan, he was responsible for the look of the +McLaren F1. Apparently after the F1, he did some work with Audi on a proposal for GT1 and GT2 Le Mans program. This all came about before +Audi USA switched gears and developed the R8 LMP1 car and its incredible successful descendants. ?

We first encountered designer Peter Stevens on Facebook earlier this month. We learned that longtime automotive designer was once involved with an Audi Le Mans project that pre-dated that of the R8R LMP1. At the time, Audi was exploring both the building of a supercar and the entry into Le Mans style sports car racing. GT1 & GT2 efforts were the hot formula at the time and the Audi TT was Ingolstadt’s only sports car.

Hard to believe it's been nearly three decades since the height of the Group B era

The short-lived FIA Group B racing category spawned some of the greatest machines of all time including the +Ferrari F40, +Porsche 959, Peugeot 205 T16, +Ford Motor Company RS200 and Lancia Delta Integrale. ?

The Porsche 959 is one of the rarest, greatest supercars ever made and was one of the original bedro

Major League Baseball has no reluctance to take money out of fans wallets so it's good to seem them acknowledge that internet fast lanes would be a bad idea?

Do you know who’s not a fan of the Federal Communication Commission’s proposal to let internet service providers offer different speeds to online services? Major League Baseball. In a letter to the…

Oh, those crazy optimists!

Oh, those crazy optimists!

A year before the United States had even launched a human being into sub-orbital space, government scientists already had a detailed plan to establish a permanent military base on the moon. This wasn't even about science and research, it was purely about telling the Soviet Union – "Mine is bigger than yours."

Clearly a self-sustaining base was way beyond even the capabilities we have more than half a century later.  Building a nuclear reactor on the moon to power this base would have been sheer folly. ?

More than 50 years ago, before man had ever stepped foot on the moon, the U.S. government hatched a plan whose ambitions were exceeded only by its total unfeasibility: A secret, self-sustaining, Soviet-shaming military moon base.
