If you though that high school algebra was tough, just imagine the sort of brain it takes to work out copyright math. The calculations required to come to the conclusion that a single iPod classic full of 40,000 mp3 files is worth 8 billion in lost revenue boggle the mind. Fortunately Rob Reid has Excel and he was able to plow through the numbers and explain them to us.

Having lived in the greater Ann Arbor area for more than twenty years now, I've definitely come to appreciate the Zingerman's family of businesses. The key lesson to take away from the success of the company is to take care of the customers and make sure they always leave happy.

If you provide great service and high quality products, they will be willing to spend more (often much more at Zingerman's) and that will eventually lead to a profitable enterprise. Obviously you need to watch expenses, but it shouldn't be the top priority in the business. This philosophy can be applied successfully to any enterprise and Ari Weinzweig has even built a business that focuses on teaching other companies how to treat customers right.
